Episodios

  • Butch Walker, Black Rebel Rebrand, Peace Tree + Dangerous Man

    19/05/2020 Duración: 01h41s

In this episode, Eric, Evan and Dan get political and debate whether 70s-inspired modern rock operas about white racist men changing their ways deserve a higher rating than a 2.0-2.5. The modern rock opera in question is titled American Love Story by Beats, Beards & Brews alum Butch Walker. One things for sure, 'ol Butch's guitar tones are absolutely on point on this album. Next, Dan gets even more fired up when he learns Eric has been slathering emu oil on his face for the past week. Why you ask? Eric was preparing for his review of Black Rebel Beard Co.'s newly rebranded formula of beard oil — now with 75% more emu oil! (versus the 0% included in the previously reviewed formula). After some back and forth emu conversation, Eric shares his rating of The Rebel, a masculine and intriguing "oud - woodsy" scent. Thankfully, the beer portion of the podcast is a lot less divisive — "Get yer politics outta my beer!" — as Eric and Evan sip on Sunny, a Belgian blonde ale from Peace Tree Brewing Co. (out of Des M

  • Havok, Fable Beard Co, Confluence + Fair State Brewing

    16/05/2020 Duración: 53min

Blueberry beard oil! Blueberry beer! Blueberry facials for your dog! We've got it all in this action-packed episode of Beats, Beards & Brews. But first... Eric, Evan and Dan get "caught in a mosh" as they review Havok's thrashtastic fifth studio album V. All right, all right. Now on to the blueberries! For the beard portion of the episode, Eric tries out Dr. Wolf Blueberry Tobacco Beard Oil from Fable Beard Co. Blueberries in your beard? Yep. Dan then proves how out of touch he is with reality by admitting to purchasing blueberry facials for his two Labrador Retrievers. Evan and Eric drink and rate The Blueberry Wizard by Confluence Brewing Co. (out of Des Moines), a Gose-style sour ale with blueberries. In case you were wondering ... Evan still doesn't like sour beers. Dan breaks the blueberry mold and reviews Mirror Universe Hazy IPA by Fair State Brewing (out of Minneapolis). Feeling lonely? Grab a handful of blueberries, dump them into a cold glass of delicious beer and hit play. We're here for you.

  • Danzig Sings Elvis, Barn Town + Tin Whiskers Brewing

    09/05/2020 Duración: 41min

In a very special episode of Beats, Beards & Brews, Eric and Dan review the long-awaited (for some) Danzig Sings Elvis cover album. Is this art? Dan isn't convinced. Listen to the episode for our Danzig deep thoughts and the usual "insightful" commentary. Danzig cover songs previewed in this episode include: First In Line Always On My Mind Fever During this episode Eric drinks and reviews Citra Neon Hazy IPA by Barn Town Brewing out of West Des Moines (IA). Dan drinks and reviews Rock Them Bot and Sock Them Bot, two Hazy IPAs from Tin Whiskers Brewing Company out of St. Paul (MN). As Eric says at the conclusion of this episode: "Crank this one up and appreciate the moment and the strange times we're in."

  • Fiona Apple, Iowa Beard Company, Hazy Beers

    24/04/2020 Duración: 01h01min

Evan, Dan and Eric — three Midwest music-loving, beer-drinking everymen — step outside of their musical wheelhouses and review Fiona Apple's Fetch the Bolt Cutters. The album is controversial, in a way, because Pitchfork gave it a 10 out of 10. Their reviews vary, but the boys all agree that this is art and everyone should listen to it. Pitchfork is still full of sh*t, though. Fiona Apple songs previewed in this episode include: Fetch the Bolt Cutters Heavy Balloon Shameika Here's a link to the Vulture article that Eric references: Fiona Apple Explains Every Song on 'Fetch the Bolt Cutters' Eric goes local for the beard portion of the episode and reviews three beard oil scents from Iowa Beard Company* — King Slayer, Tobacco Bitters and American Gentleman. These scents are all part of the Beard Oil Sample Pack that he acquired from MoMere. Eric also shares an initial take on the Tobacco Bitters Soy Wax Candle. Dan, Eric and Evan then continue their local brewery beer journey with reviews of PeachBerry Kush

Things get a little sweet for the beer portion of the show, as the gang all select some locally brewed honey beers to enjoy. Dan drinks the dangerously smooth Mexican Honey Imperial Lager by Minneapolis-based Indeed Brewing Company. The beer's slogan is "all buzz, no bite" and it's not false advertising. Meanwhile, Evan and Eric sip on the easier going 4.9% Easy on the Eyes Session Brown Ale (with local

Myrkur songs previewed during this episode include: Fager som en Ros Leaves of Yggdrasil House Carpenter The boys drop some peach cobbler analogies nobody asked for. Turns out the cobbler system is pretty intuitive for reviews. Additional albums mentioned in this episode: 3.15.20 by Childish Gambino Heaven Is Real by Genevieve Next up, Dan and Eric revisit Beardbrand Stone Mason*, which they first reviewed during a recent a failed recording attempt. • Cattle Decapitation, Holiday Beard Oils, Sufferfest Beer Gauntlet

    19/12/2019 Duración: 51min

Evan and Eric (minus Dan) present this special "holiday-themed" episode of Beats, Beards & Brews recorded live in Des Moines. The duo took some time after the Thanksgiving holiday to fully digest Cattle Decapitation's Death Atlas, an extreme metal concept album about climate change and the extinction of the human race due to its own inaction and poor choices. A conversation on "goblin vocals," blast beats and mass human extinction ensues (along with a review of the album). You know, just normal holiday business! Eric and Evan also play a fun game called "Would You Put That on Your Face?" where they determine whether they would put special holiday beard oils on their faces based on the scent profiles. The holiday beard oils mentioned in this episode include: The Claus by Fable Beard Co. The Ginger Beard Man by Fable Beard Co. Jack Frost by Fable Beard Co. Winter Spice by Skully's Scrooge by Skully's Ho, Ho, Ho! by The Bearded Bastard Holiday Spice by Texas Beard Co. In keeping with the holiday spirit of

  • Taylor Hawkins, No Drink November, Rumpkin

    20/11/2019 Duración: 51min

In this action-packed episode of Beats, Beards & Brews, the gang reviews Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders' latest album Get the Money featuring an all-star cast of iconic rock 'n' rollers. Dan then shares his tale of failing at No Drink November and the boys discuss trying to be more conscientious of their beer consumption ... while sipping on some delicious brews! Speaking of delicious brews, the gang finally tracks down Rumpkin, a monstrous 16-17% abv pumpkin ale barrel-aged in rum barrels. This beer has been on Eric's radar for a long time! Plus there's a bonus review of Three Floyds' Gumballhead. Pro tip: Keep an eye out for those post-Thanksgiving beard product deals on social media and try out something new!

  • Sturgill Simpson, Duke Cannon, Hop Avenger

    22/10/2019 Duración: 01h04min

Beats, Beards & Brews favorite Sturgill Simpson is back ... and this time he unleashes the Sound & Fury on unsuspecting listeners. Beyond the music, it's time for another round of Sudsin' It Up With Eric and Dan (Evan is too busy being a Dad to shower right now!). The duo test out Duke Cannon's Big Ass Brick of Soap product line in several different scents. Please do not drop this soap! For the beer portion of the episode, the gang drinks Voodoo Ranger's latest IPA release, the Hop Avenger IPA. That's right, the whole crew managed to grab the same beer release this time around. Woo! Oh yeah, and the Beats, Beards & Brews Bump™ is still a thing.

  • Tool, Natural Deodorant, Cocktail Beers

    13/09/2019 Duración: 59min

It took Tool 13 years to release Fear Inoculum, so by comparison, Eric, Evan and Dan taking 3 months between episodes isn't so bad. Welcome to Episode No. 69 of Beats, Beards & Brews (nice). The gang first tackles Tool's new album where the non-interlude songs are all 10+ minutes in length. Epic prog or bloated nerd rock? You'll have to listen to the episode to find out. Next up, Eric talks about his switch to natural deodorant (he uses Schmidt's brand deodorant right now), while Dan and Evan throw out some skepticism. Something for you non-bearded folks to enjoy! New Dad Evan (congrats!) leaves the episode to tend to his child, so Dan and Eric wrap things up with some reviews of a couple cocktail-inspired beers, more specifically, two Russian cocktail-inspired beers. Here's a bulleted list for easy reference/enjoyment: Left Hand Brewing Company White Russian Nitro (a White Stout with Coffee and Vanilla added) Insight Brewing The Misadventures of My Rowdy Uncle (Moscow Mule Beer with Ginger and Lime) Th

    20/06/2019 Duración: 01h03min

Eric, Evan and Dan return to their respective mics for some almost summertime fun with a review of Silversun Pickups' Widow's Weeds. Let's just say it's not quite "album of the summer." Dan and Eric test out Grave Before Shave's latest beard-softening product, its Beard Butter, which is not heatproof. It's also better for big, burly beards than it is for tender, trimmed beards. The Beats, Beards & Brews trio then goes on to review a trio of Radler aka Shandy beers, which are underwhelming in the abv department. Tag Tangerine Wheat from Lion Bridge Brewing Roadie Grapefruit Radler from Great Divide Bitburger Radler from Bitburger International Which beverage did Eric boldly declare to be his "beer of the summer"? You gotta listen to the episode to find out!

They all wonder about the fate of the third Bill and Ted film and shortly after the recording, some most excellent news was revealed. Bodom's mascot is the Grim Reaper, so Melvins are discussed. The boys then attempt to answer the age-old question, "how much beard oil is too much beard oil?" They ramble about beards for a while and also check in on the current state of everyone's face fuzz. Lastly, everyone shares a review of a different "spring" beer: New Belgium Liquid Paradise IPA (Evan) Toppling Goliath HOPSMACK! DIPA (Dan) Larry's Latest Flamingo Fruit Fight (Eric) Make sure to vote in the Voodoo Ranger poll to choose its next IPA flavor. There's only one right answer: Hop Avenger IPA.

Dan and Eric then revisit some previously reviewed beard products including Artius Man, Burton's, Bossman and Bluebeard's. For the beer portion of the episode, the bearded ones drink down some Fresh Haze IPA from Deschutes Brewery. The 6.5% abv brew is a refreshing beverage, no doubt. Its true haziness is up for debate.
